(lol)cats. sports. nerdy things.

First things first, I hate ”What a Wonderful World.” I think it should be reserved for ironic video montages and AARP commercials.

Now that I got that off my back, I’m excited to see this because A. I’m learning Polish and B. I’m Filipino. And as badwobot notes, it’s very interesting to hear Polish with a Filipino accent.

Pronunciation is a difficult task for non-native Polish speakers. For example, the “ch” sound is expressed by the letters cz and ć/ci-. Cz is sounds like the ch in chalk, while ć/ci- is similar to the ch in cheek. Notice the difference?

The cz sound, like CHALK, requires your mouth to be rounder in form, whereas the ć/ci- sound, like CHEEK, flattens your lips, almost as if you’re gritting your own teeth. The cz is also naturally harder sounding than ć/ci- sound.

For this reason, I’ve found it completely necessary to practice in front of a mirror.

So now I get to finally put my skills to the test. Here is my attempt to translate the first few minutes of this clip:

Judge in Hat: Dzień dobry. Good morning/afternoon.
Conrado Yanez: Dzień dobry.
Some other judge: Dzień dobry.
Judge in Hat: Czy mówisz po polsku? Do you speak Polish?
Conrado Yanez: Mam na imie Conrado Yanez. …z Filipin. … My name is Conrado Yanez. …I’m Filipino. …
Judge in Hat: Bardzo dobrze, dobre … Very well, good …

As you can tell, I’ve mastered Lekcja 1: Greetings and Introductions, haha. But to give me some credit — look at that consonant to vowel ratio?!!

Dziękuję! I do zobaczenia.
(Thank you! And goodnight.)

Early Bird Special: Tuesdays suck — so here’s a Polish Filipino dude doing a spot-on impression of Louis Armstrong.

i have several comments. the first being, there’s such a thing as polish filipinos? how did that guy end up in poland? second, it’s funny to hear polish with a filipino accent. lastly, this reinforces the stereotype that filipinos live for and are incredibly talented at karaoke. is that good or bad? i dunno, but i like videos of it.
